McDermott, Joan M., 85 of Cranston passed peacefully Thanksgiving Day (11/28/2019) at the Scalabrini nursing Villa. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Austin P. and Madeline (Prest) Cooney. She had been the wife of the late Francis W. McDermott for 45 years. Mrs. McDermott had worked as a secretary for Providence Gas for 10 years before retiring in 1999. Prior to Providence Gas she was with General Electric Wiring Division for many years.
Besides being a communicant of St. Matthew Church, she was a member of the Woman’s Auxiliary of the Providence Order of Elks Lodge 14. She was
founding member of the Edgewood Girls Softball League and a former member of St. Bridgit Church.
She leaves 4 daughters, Kathleen M (Thomas) Stewart, Karen M. (Robert) Burns, Mariann F. (Saroeun) San and Lori A. Melvin all of Cranston, James Cooney of Fair Haven, MA, Austin T. Cooney of Coventry, 2 sisters Donna J. Dube of Waterbury, CT, Elizabeth Lonergan of Smithfield, 6 Grandchildren Maghan Burns Beland, Robert Burns, Michael Stewart, Kevin San, Robert Melvin and Colleen Melvin. She also leaves 8 great grandchildren; Marc, Ana, Archer, Frankie, Eamon, Karson, Mackenzie and Harrison. She was mother of the late Michael F. McDermott, sister of John “Bud” Cooney and Joseph Cooney, Eleanor and Veronica Cooney, Alberta Duffy, Rita Whalen and Marion Humecky.
Her life will be celebrated with calling hours Sunday 2-5 and a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Matthew Church, Elmwood Avenue, Cranston Monday at 10:00am. Burial will follow in Saint Ann Cemetery.
