Wellman, Joan C., 87, passed peacefully Wednesday July 26, 2023 at the Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence. Born in Providence a daughter of the late Joseph and Bertha (Zuleger) Platt, she had lived In Cranston most of her life, except when she was traveling around the world.Joan was an office manager in the HVAC industry for many years before retiring.
Always the adventurer, she moved to Arizona in 1954 after graduating from Cranston High School. Her parents were none too happy with her, but she went anyway. There she worked as a bank teller, even witnessing a robbery and giving a statement to the police. (BTW, the robbers were caught.) She would always return to Cranston before jetting off to somewhere new. In the late 60’s, she traveled with her former husband to Sicily, where he was stationed in the military. She was proud to say they were married in Sicily by a justice of the peace, with her wearing a mini-skirt and stilettos.
A lifelong Catholic, she a communicant of St. Matthew Church where she sang in the choir. You could always hear he voice! She later attended St Mary’s Church in Cranston, even figuring out how to stream mass online during Covid.
Joan was the life of every party, with her beautiful clothes, shoes and jewelry, and her hot pink lipstick. She had many dear friends, no one more important than her twin Jane, who passed away ten years ago. They were together more than apart. You could hear them laughing before you entered the room they were in. She was reunited with her parents, older brother Robert Platt, her precious twin Jane Parrella and her younger sister, Dorothy Casale, who passed away in 1982.
She leaves a son Keith (Sharon) Wellman of Ware, MA and 3 grandchildren; Denon Michaels, Donavan Manzaro and Erik Granath. She was sister of the late Robert Platt, her twin sister Jane Parrella and Dorothy Casale. She leaves her beloved nieces and nephew, Laurie Cillley, and her husband Bill, Nancy Crosby and her former husband Fred, Robert Casale and his wife Jassica, Joseph and Stephanie Casale and Sydney and Judith Casale. She was blessed with five great, great nephews, Matthew and Mason Crosby, Caleb and Nolan Crosby and Eli Mancini, who she absolutely adored.
Her life will be celebrated with calling hours Tuesday from 6:00pm to 8:00pm in the Stapleton Family Funeral Home, 684 Park Avenue, Cranston. Funeral Wednesday (8-2-23) at 8:30am with a mass of Christian burial in St Mary Church, Cranston Street at 10:00am. Burial will follow in St Ann Cemetery.
